About the Local
Who we are
The Spruce Grove Fire Fighters Association is the union of the full-time professional fire fighters of Spruce Grove — IAFF Local 3021, chartered November 26, 1985.
We are not the fire department itself. The City operates Spruce Grove Fire Services; we are the union of the people who work there. The Local represents 59 members, responds on mutual aid with neighbouring services, and runs full Advanced Life Support on every apparatus.
How we came to be
Local 3021 was organized on November 26, 1985 by four firefighters — Jak Berezan, Ed McLean, Gary Wiebe, and Don Degenhardt — who took the first formal steps toward a professional labour relationship in Spruce Grove.
What followed wasn't easy. A rejected agreement, mass termination, a personally-funded legal fight, and a landmark Alberta Labour Relations Board ruling shaped what the Local is today.
